The most significant phenomenon of the 2008 presidential elections is the large number of independents who are voting in the Democratic primaries and the fact that those independent voters are propelling Barack Obama to victory. In South Carolina, more than 23% of voters in that Democratic primary were independents and they voted by almost 2 - 1 for Obama over Hillary Clinton.

WASHINGTON (Jan. 27) - More than half the states holding presidential contests next month on Super Tuesday allow unaffiliated voters to participate, giving millions of independents a chance to shape what is usually an insider affair among Democratic and Republican loyalists.
